Dealing with Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is an overproduction of pigment caused from increased melanin in the skin. Certain factors such as sun or UV exposure and acne medications can worsen or darken hyperpigmentation.  Individuals with naturally darker skin tone will be more prone to hyperpigmentation due to increased melanin in the skin.

Some of the most common forms of hyperpigmentation are known as Melasma and Chloasma (liver spots).

Melasma appears as a brown pigmentation typically on the face and generally caused or triggered by hormonal changes in the body, especially pregnancy. Melasma can fade over time but will worsen by sun or UV exposure. It can be treated with certain brightening agents such as Vitamin C (GMC Antioxidant 10 and 20 Serum), Retinol ( GMC Retinol 0.5 % Night Gel Cream, 1% Gel Cream & ZO Retinol Skin Brightener 1%) Hydroquinone (ZO Pigment control cream 2%), Azelaic Acid, Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin and of course by facial laser treatments.

Chloasma, also known as liver spots, can actually be treated with exfoliation. Chloasma is very similar to melasma but appears in women who are not pregnant where Melasma tends to mostly be present during pregnancy.

There are a number of additional varieties of hyperpigmentation. If you think you may be experiencing a form of hyperpigmentation make sure to book with our aesthetician for a skin analysis and treatment plan.
